Vehicles Stuck – Too Much Snow! Total closure of the A21 in Lower Austria

Date:

The continued snowfall is now also causing significant disruptions in eastern Austria. Recently, the Vienna outer ring motorway (A21) in Lower Austria had to be completely closed.

On the slopes in the Vienna Forest, many vehicles were at the end of their journey and simply got stuck in the snow. Asfinag and various towing services are in constant use. The duration of the ban cannot yet be predicted. It was recommended to bypass the A21 extensively via the Kremser highway S33, the Stockerauer highway S5 and the Danube embankment highway A22.

ÖAMTC: Avoid unnecessary travel
The ÖAMTC called on road users to inform themselves about the current road and weather situation before departure and to take snow chains with them when traveling to higher altitudes. You should refrain from making non-essential travel at this time.

Similar warnings were also issued in many other states. Road conditions were particularly wintry on the north side of the Alps and on the eastern edge of the Alps. Many main routes were difficult to pass on Saturday morning. Vehicles also became stuck on other highways, making road clearing difficult.

Clearance work hampered by accidents
For example, the western highway (A1) near Salzburg Nord was not passable on Saturday morning due to truck recovery work. The situation was slightly better on the Tauern motorway (A10); the Katschberg tunnel had to be closed in a southerly direction at short notice. In Tyrol, the Brennerstraße (B182) near Gries was closed due to stuck vehicles and there were also obstacles on the A13, the Brenner highway, due to snowfall. Due to the snow load, trees were repeatedly broken – the fire brigade and clearing services worked at full speed.
