According to studies, people who are both fully vaccinated against the coronavirus and infected have the strongest protection against the pathogen SARS-CoV-2. This “hybrid immunity” is said to provide a high level of protection against re-infection for up to 20 months.
One of the studies is based on data from Sweden, but does not yet refer to the omicron variant of the virus. The 20-month “very good protection” against vaccination and infection was “much better than we expected for the original two-dose vaccination schedule,” said Paul Hunter, a physician at the University of East Anglia who was not on the study, published in the medical journal The Lancet Infectious Diseases.
In another study from Brazil, published in the journal, researchers found that vaccines “have been shown to provide significant additional protection for people with a previous Covid-19 infection.” It analyzed the health data of more than 200,000 people in 2020 and 2021 in Brazil, which has the second highest Covid-19 death rate in the world.
Hunter pointed out, however, that both studies were based on data taken before the appearance of the omicron variant.
