A twelve-year-old’s attempted knife attack on her teacher sparked outrage in France. In the middle of English class Wednesday in the city of Rennes, the student pulled a large knife from her school bag and threatened to kill the teacher and any students who didn’t like her, the prosecutor’s office said.
The teacher ordered the other students out of the classroom and ran away from the student, who was overwhelmed by other staff.
No evidence of radicalization
There is no evidence for the student’s radicalization, says prosecutor Philippe Astruc. Last week the teacher confiscated the student’s cell phone in class.
Psychiatric research
It is being investigated whether this incident may have anything to do with the crime. The underage girl could be held by the police for a maximum of 24 hours. We are still waiting for the results of a psychiatric examination.
After a radical Islamist stabbed a teacher in Arras, northern France, two months ago, the country is on the highest level of terror alert. At the beginning of December there was another Islamist terrorist act: a young man stabbed a German tourist near the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Tension in the country is correspondingly high, especially in schools. According to the prosecutor, the student in Rennes told her teacher: “This happened in Arras and I will do the same.”
