Persistent storms and snowfall kept emergency services busy across the country on Saturday night. Christmas traffic also clogs the streets. In Lower Austria alone, the fire brigade was called out 130 times, said Franz Resperger of the regional command. In Burgenland, winter roads (see photo above) caused several accidents and in Salzburg a man was killed.
In Lower Austria, emergency services had to remove trees that had uprooted or fallen on electricity and telephone lines, especially in the south-west. However, there was a high avalanche danger on the mountains.
Resperger reported dangerous situations for the helpers. In some cases, trees in the immediate vicinity of the site also fell to the ground during felling work. The storm was accompanied by heavy rainfall in many regions. There would be no injuries.
Collision with snow vehicle
In Burgenland, three cars left the road due to winter conditions, the Oberwart city fire brigade announced on Saturday morning. All vehicles, including their occupants, have been recovered.
According to the city fire brigade, a car collided with a snow-clearing vehicle in Oberwart. Due to a car rollover, rescue services, fire brigade and police were deployed to the Draßmarkt (Oberpullendorf district). According to the Burgenland state security center, a woman was injured and taken to Eisenstadt hospital.
Salzburg fell to Bach
In the Flachgau in Salzburg on Friday evening, a driver plunged his vehicle into a stream and died. It is not yet clear why the man lost control of the steering wheel.
The Flachgauer was carried away by the strong current. Water rescue, fire brigade, police and Red Cross searched for the 66-year-old and were able to save him. CPR was immediately started, but the man from Flachgau died at the scene of the accident, the police reported on Saturday.
A seriously injured person in Carinthia
A young woman from Carinthia from the Villach Land district was less lucky on Friday. She also left the road on a snowy road and ended up on her roof. She was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
Emergency services were also deployed at night in the Tyrolean lowlands. In Reith im Alpbachtal (Kufstein district), a couple’s car was hit by a mudslide and pushed off the road. The driver (25) was injured.
Christmas traffic causes traffic jams
There has been heavy traffic on the transit routes to the south and east since the night hours. This was reported early Saturday morning by ÖAMTC mobility information.
As expected, holiday traffic on the Tauernautobahn (A10) caused traffic jams. The columns left for the south around 4:30 am and there were traffic jams of up to eight kilometers between Hallein and Wharves.
