According to US intelligence agencies, Iran is deeply involved in planning attacks by Yemen’s Houthi rebels on ships in the Red Sea. The drones and missiles used in the attacks are reportedly from Iran.
US National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson referred to recently released intelligence information. In addition, Iran also provided surveillance systems “that were crucial to the Houthi attacks.”
Iran denies the accusations
Watson told CNN that Iran had left operational decisions to the Houthis. However, without the support of the Islamic Republic, rebels in Yemen would find it difficult to effectively monitor and carry out attacks on merchant ship routes in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.
Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri rejected the US accusations. “The resistance front in the region has its own resources and acts according to its own capabilities,” Bagheri told the news agency on Saturday. The accusations are hypocritical.
Narrowly missed chemical tanker
According to CNN, Iran-allied Houthi rebels carried out more than 100 attacks on a dozen commercial ships last month. The US military said the Houthis again attacked two merchant ships in the Red Sea on Saturday.
An attack drone narrowly missed a Norwegian chemical and oil tanker. An Indian-flagged Gabonese oil tanker was hit by an attack drone. But no one was injured, the US Central Command in Tampa (Florida) announced on Platform X.
Military alliance against Houthis
To better protect the important shipping route through the Red Sea leading to the Suez Canal, the US launched a military alliance early this week. According to US information, more than twenty countries have so far agreed to participate in ‘Operation Prosperity Guardian’. The Houthis’ aim is to use their attacks to end the Israeli military operation in the Gaza Strip.
