A young mountaineer fell 300 to 400 meters into a gully on Traunstein and died. The 33-year-old from the Linz area climbed the Naturfreundesteig on Tuesday, but probably slipped during the descent of the Moaralm. His body was only found after a major search.
The mountaineer took the train from Linz to Gmunden on Tuesday and then climbed the Naturfreundesteig to Traunstein. He also sent photos to his partner. When she could not reach him via text message on Tuesday afternoon, the concerned woman raised the alarm.
Search made difficult by location problems
The search for the missing mountaineer was greatly complicated by the fact that the signal from his smartphone was assigned to the transmitter in Ebensee – an effect with which the mountain rescuers from Gmunden are already painfully familiar. A police helicopter from Vienna was initially deployed to search the wrong area, and another helicopter from Salzburg was also unsuccessful in the subsequent night search.
The body lay next to a mountain pine field
On the advice of the mountain rescuers from Gmunden, a search was carried out at the Moaralm in the morning. Around 10 a.m., the Salzburg Dragonfly first found the dead man’s green backpack and shortly afterwards the athlete’s body, dressed in black, was found next to a pine field. The rescue was completed around 12 noon.
