Styria needs heroes like this: Fabiano, who was only eleven years old, saved his father’s life after falling down the stairs. The student started the rescue chain and provided first aid. He has now been decorated for this.
The dramatic moments took place last summer: Fabiano from Bärnbach was heating up lunch in the kitchen on July 5, 2023 when he heard a dull rumbling sound. “I called my father, but got no answer,” the eleven-year-old describes the situation.
Everything you learn during the first aid course
When he looked, he saw his father lying motionless on the ground. Instead of panicking, Fabiano acted decisively: “I spoke to him and checked his breathing. He was unconscious.” The student placed his father in the recovery position, called the emergency call and opened the entrance gate. He had learned all this during a first aid course at school. He deepened his knowledge at the state competition, where he received the silver badge.
No permanent damage
Thanks to the exemplary response, Fabiano’s father quickly received emergency medical attention and was taken to hospital. Fortunately, Styria was able to go again a week later. The accident caused no lasting damage, thanks to the courageous intervention of his son.

For the first time since the mission, Fabiano met familiar faces again: the paramedics from the Red Cross Voitsberg-Köflach, who cared for his father after the accident, visited the youngster with representatives from the district office.
“I immediately took care of Fabiano and explained to him what the emergency doctor would do next,” says paramedic Hanna. Rescue workers Magdalena, Bernd and Lukas were also on site: “Fabiano’s performance was fantastic,” everyone praised in unison.
Lifesaver certificate for eleven year olds
The extraordinary act was also recognized by district office manager Ernst Meixner and district rescue commander Roman Wonisch: In addition to a lifesaver certificate and a filled Red Cross backpack, they have a special surprise in store: Fabiano has the opportunity to participate in a basic first aid course to to further deepen his knowledge.
But that’s not all: the aspiring lifesaver will now also be involved with the Youth Red Cross group at the Voitsberg-Köflach district office. And with a clear message: “Take a first aid course and help if necessary.”
