In the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, the first underground school will be opened in March due to the ongoing Russian war of aggression. Construction work in the city’s industrial district is going according to plan despite enemy shelling and frost, Mayor Ihor Terekhov said in Telegram on Wednesday. The first concrete structures have already been built. Work is being done on insulation, ventilation, water and sewerage.
After the opening in March, an underground school will also be built in a central area of the city. Several classrooms had previously been set up in the city’s metro. Currently, more than 1,000 younger schoolchildren take turns learning underground in approximately 65 classes.
Students abroad receive online lessons
According to the authorities, only about 40 percent of the more than 110,000 students are in Kharkiv itself. A large portion of the rest have fled abroad and are learning online at the old schools.
Ukraine has been defending a Russian invasion for more than 22 months. The former city of Kharkiv is only 30 kilometers from the Russian border and regularly suffers from Russian rocket fire.
