US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin has been released from hospital. The Pentagon announced this on Monday. Austin is recovering well and will “perform his duties remotely for a period of time before returning to the Pentagon full-time,” the statement said.
Austin has “full access to necessary secure communications channels,” the Defense Department said.
Austin thanked doctors and nurses
In a statement, Austin thanked his doctors and nursing staff for their “professionalism and excellent support.” The 70-year-old announced last week that he had prostate cancer.
Since the beginning of this year, he has been treated for complications after surgery at a military hospital near Washington and was temporarily cared for in intensive care.
Criticism of secrecy
Austin came under fire for initially keeping his cancer and hospital stay a secret. However, US President Joe Biden confirmed that he wanted to remain with his defense secretary.
