Two men in Italy are under house arrest in shackles for dealing in counterfeit Habsburg gold coins. A third person is also being investigated. The counterfeit coins closely resembled the originals in diameter and weight, police said.
The three men, aged between 25 and 30, are accused of selling 1915 gold ducats depicting Emperor Franz Joseph and the eagle of the Habsburg Empire to shops trading in gold between the provinces of Pistoia and Florence.
Although police said the coins closely resembled the originals, detailed investigation revealed that the coins were actually made of silver and covered with a single gold patina to deceive customers. The bank accounts were seized and charges were filed against the men. They are accused of fraud and receiving stolen property.
