The Supreme Court has long ago decided that keeping pets cannot be prohibited across the board in rental agreements. But this has not (yet?) reached the real housing market: dog owners in particular report terrible experiences when looking for a new place to live.
A ‘Krone’ reader searched for an apartment on Lake Attersee in Upper Austria for two and a half months on platforms such as willhaben.at or Immoscout. The 52-year-old, who wishes to remain anonymous, had a great job in the area and wanted to move from Burgenland.
“I am a quiet tenant,” she says. “I like clean things and don’t have parties. Yet I received more than sixty rejections when looking for an apartment.” The reason: The German-born woman has a knee-high, 13-year-old mixed-breed dog. And the landlords at Attersee want tenants without pets. According to the dog owner, a real estate agent also confirmed to her that dog hostility had increased.
