A 43-year-old was hit by a branch during forest work in the municipality of Edelsbach (Southeast Styria district) on Friday and died.
Two of his acquaintances who had worked with him in the forest alerted rescuers, state police headquarters said. The emergency doctor could only determine that the man was dead.
The man was not wearing a protective helmet
At 9.50 am the man and two acquaintances felled a beech tree in the forest in Rohr an der Raab. He operated a winch with a remote control.
When the tree fell, a branch broke off at a height of about 15 to 20 meters, apparently landing in a nearby tree and falling to the ground. The 43-year-old, who was not wearing a protective helmet, was hit on the head by the branch weighing approximately 20 kilograms and suffered fatal injuries.
A number of fatal forestry accidents have occurred in Styria since the beginning of this year.
