Dispute with general – Zelensky wants a “new start” for the military leadership

Date:

Nearly two years after the start of Russia’s major assault on Ukraine, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says he is considering a reorganization of his country’s leadership. “A restart is necessary,” Zelensky told Italian television channel RAI in an interview on Sunday.

In view of repeated speculation about a possible replacement of popular military commander-in-chief Valery Zalushnyy, Zelensky said he was interested in replacing a number of leading representatives of the state, and not only in the army. ‘I think about this exchange. It is a question for the entire leadership of the country.”

Zelenskyj explained that unity and trust were necessary. “If we want to win, we all have to work together,” the president said. “We must not be discouraged, we must have the right and positive energy. Negativity should stay at home. We cannot afford to give up.”

General criticized the stalemate
In the past, there have been repeated disagreements between Zelensky and Saluzhny. In November, the general declared that the war had reached an impasse, prompting a rebuke from the president. The Ukrainian army had previously achieved only limited success with a counter-offensive against the Russian army’s positions on the approximately 1,000 kilometer long front.

In a recently published article for the American television channel CNN, Saluzhnyj criticized, among other things, the fact that it had not been possible to build up sufficient combat power due to the resistance in Ukraine.

Dismissal rejected
According to media reports, the respected general is said to have rejected a request from the president to resign. Army chief Olexander Syrskyj and military intelligence chief Kyrylo Budanov were mentioned as possible successors to the post of commander-in-chief.
