A powerful earthquake has shaken the US state of Hawaii, according to US seismologists. The magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck near Pahala on Hawaii’s main island, also known as the Big Island, the U.S. Earthquake Observatory USGS said Friday.
The epicenter of the earthquake was 37 kilometers below the Earth’s surface and no tsunami warning was issued.
The Big Island is the largest of Hawaii’s eight main islands. The earthquake was felt across the island, according to an analysis of field reports on a USGS website. The agency said the risk of damage or fatalities was low.
Seismic activity
Hawaii is part of a seismically active region of the world, although it is located in the center of a large tectonic plate and not on the edge. The island is home to six active volcanoes, including Mauna Loa, the largest volcano in the world. In 2022, Mauna Loa erupted for the first time in four decades, spewing lava fountains 60 meters high.
In May 2018, Kilauea Volcano erupted on the Big Island following a series of earthquakes. Thousands of people were evacuated and dozens of houses were destroyed.
