Seven civilians were killed in a Russian drone attack on the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv on Friday evening. According to the governor of the oblast, children are also among the victims. After a gas station was hit, a massive fire broke out and spread to numerous adjacent buildings.
Russia said it had attacked the city in eastern Ukraine with Iranian Shahed drones. Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov reported on Telegram that civilian infrastructure had been affected. Terekhov wrote that gasoline caught fire at a gas station and fourteen private houses were set on fire. Accordingly, the fire spread over an area of 3,700 square meters.
This post shows a video of the flaming inferno:
50 city residents, including children, were evacuated. Civil defense is fighting the fire and continuing the search for possible victims, Terekhow said. Media reported explosions in the country’s second-largest city. Governor Oleh Synehubow wrote on the short message service Telegram that the Nemyshlianskyi district had been affected. There was also an attack in a cafe in Velykjy Burluk, east of Kharkov.
The Ukrainian Air Force also reported drone attacks on Kharkiv on Telegram. Initially, nothing was known about any deaths or injuries.
Also injured after an attack in Odessa
Meanwhile, at least one person was injured in the Black Sea region of Odessa in the south, according to military governor Oleh Kiper. A 44-year-old man was injured in the arm by shrapnel and is being treated in hospital.
Moscow has repelled drone attacks
Russia, for its part, said it had repelled a drone attack over the Bryansk region near the border with Ukraine on Saturday evening. The Defense Ministry in Moscow said early Saturday morning that air defenses intercepted and destroyed three Ukrainian drones. Initially, nothing was known about any damage or casualties. The information could not be independently verified.
Ukraine has been defending itself against Russia’s war of aggression for almost two years. Both sides repeatedly use drones. However, the damage caused by Ukraine is disproportionate to the destruction caused by Russia in its neighboring country.
