Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal traveled to Japan to campaign for help in rebuilding his country. “We would like to work with Japan on the modernization and reconstruction of Ukraine,” he said on Monday.
Japan has supported Ukraine with more than $10 billion (equivalent to 9.27 billion euros) since the war began about two years ago, making the country the country’s fourth-largest donor, Schmyhal said. Moreover, “the private sector is the main driver of reconstruction in Ukraine.”
Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida reaffirmed his government’s willingness to support Ukraine “in defending its freedom and independence and restoring its territorial integrity.” The country will provide long-term assistance to stabilize the Ukrainian economy. Agreements have now been signed on infrastructure reconstruction, mine clearance and agriculture.
Costs of 451 billion euros
Rebuilding the war-torn country could cost more than 451 billion euros. The World Bank, the EU and the UN recently came to this estimate. This year alone, 14 billion euros are needed.
