Are almond milk, vegan salami and plant-based salmon good alternatives to animal products or conscious consumer deception? Courts have to decide this again and again. And if what’s on the inside must be what’s on the inside, are meatloaf, scouring milk and hot dogs misleading packages?
Vegan alternatives to animal products have been repeatedly banned in the EU. Since 2017, only products from the ‘normal udder secretion’ of animals can be declared as milk. Plant-based substitutes, such as those made from oats, almonds or peas, are now only available as “drinks” on supermarket shelves. However, there are currently no uniform regulations for fishing alternatives.
