Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has accused the German military of preparing for war with Russia. This would appear from the intercepted Bundeswehr conversation about the Taurus cruise missile. History has many examples of armies that can ‘initiate or provoke’ wars.
The conversation between the four German officers was not just a mind game about rockets and tanks, Medvedev said. As reported, a 38-minute recording showing a conversation between military officers has been circulating since Friday (see video above). This is about the possible use of German Taurus cruise missiles by the Ukrainian armed forces and their possible effects. The cruise missiles have a range of up to 500 kilometers.
Scholz informed?
The former Russian president (2008 to 2012) countered that it was unclear whether the “political leadership” under German Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) was aware of the officers’ conversations. Scholz is in any case a ‘liverwurst chancellor’. Medvedev is one of the loudest supporters of Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin and repeatedly criticizes the West in his posts on social networks.
The intercepted recording was distributed on Telegram by the editor-in-chief of Russian state broadcaster RT, Margarita Simonyan. CDU defense expert Roderich Kieswetter said there were indications that a Russian participant took part in the digital conference call. What now needs to be clarified is how the Russian spies obtained the dial-in numbers. According to “Bild am Sonntag”, the meeting was conducted via Webex via a landline from the Bundeswehr office.
More money to combat espionage
Scholz also spoke of a “very serious matter” and announced that clarification would be forthcoming. “Firstly, all those responsible at all levels of the Bundeswehr must immediately receive extensive training in secure communications. Secondly, it must be ensured that secure and secret information and communication are possible in a stable manner,” said Federal Defense Commissioner Eva Högl (SPD). If this is not technically the case everywhere, it will have to be retrofitted. In addition, more investment must be made in defense against espionage. The incident initially has no personal consequences.
The Ukrainian government has been demanding delivery of the Taurus weapon system for months. Scholz rules this out because it could draw his country into the war in Ukraine. However, experts point out that the Ukrainian armed forces are already very capable of operating and programming the cruise missiles themselves.
