Oil Tankers Stopped – Iran Shows Video of Ships Being Detained

Date:

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) detained two Greek oil tankers in the Persian Gulf on Friday for violating maritime regulations. Now Iran has broadcast footage showing the Revolutionary Guards taking control of the ships (see video above).

According to information from Tehran, the crews on their ships are unharmed. Observers suspect retaliation behind the Iranian action, after a tanker carrying Iranian oil was recently detained in Greek waters. Greece protested in the strongest terms, calling it an act of piracy in international waters.

Athens summons Iranian ambassador
The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Iranian ambassador on Friday and demanded the immediate release of the crews. According to Athens, the ships should be able to continue their journey. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, these actions would have “very negative consequences” for Greek-Iranian relations.

According to information from Athens, the crew of an Iranian Navy helicopter boarded the Greek vessel Delta Poseidon on Friday in international waters about 22 nautical miles (about 40 kilometers) off the coast of Iran. Armed Iranians then arrested the crew.

A second Greek ship called the Prudent Warrior (pictured above) was also stopped and its crew arrested, the Greek foreign ministry said. All responsible international organizations have been informed of the incidents.
