A 16-year-old was rescued from the Danube on Wednesday by two passers-by near the Handelskai metro station in Vienna-Brigittenau. According to his own statements, he was there on the stairs having a snack with friends when he tripped and fell into the river.
The police were alerted around 2:15 p.m. When the officials arrived at the scene, the stairway in the area of the Georg-Danzer-Stegs, the two rescuers were no longer on site. The 16-year-old was received by the professional rescue service and taken to a hospital for further examination.
The boy said he couldn’t climb out himself. Attempts by his friends to rope him to shore also failed. The passers-by eventually pulled him out with a towel.
