They probably underestimated the Traunstein. Four young people left too late on Thursday and fell into darkness during the descent. The poorly equipped boys had no headlamps and had to call mountain rescuers for help. The operation wasn’t over until around midnight.
Shortly after 9 p.m. on Thursday, mountain rescuers in Gmunden received an emergency call from a group of four from Traunstein. The four boys from the Linz-Land district (17 to 21 years old) climbed the Mairalmsteig to the Traunstein around 1 p.m. in the afternoon. Only five hours later, around 6:30 p.m., did they leave for the valley via the Naturfreundesteig.

At that time, the sun was already setting on Gmunden, plunging the group into darkness. They had no lights except cell phone flashlights. At an altitude of almost 1,000 meters above sea level, they lost their way at 9 p.m. and alerted mountain rescuers. The helpers went up with a team that evening and were able to meet the boys.
After running out of thermal jackets and refreshments, the group was brought safely to the valley. The mountain rescuers’ operation only ended around midnight.
