In February 2022, two 18-year-old women from Graz set a fire and attacked three men with knives. One victim suffered 13 cuts and stab wounds. They were convicted a year ago. The leader must go to prison for twelve years. Parts of the verdict against her accomplice were quashed. New negotiations took place in Graz on Tuesday. The verdict: eleven years plus imprisonment, not legally binding.
“If three people had been dead, there would have been no reason to be surprised at the way they acted,” prosecutor Hansjörg Bacher said in his plea. ‘They went crazy trying to kill people. And in doing so, he left a trail of fear and pain in Graz.”
Several legally binding rulings have already been made
The verdicts for a toilet set on fire in an apartment building are now legally binding (judge Raimund Frei: “People could have died there”), an attempted murder of a student with 13 stab wounds and the heavy coercion of passers-by, who threatened them with knives.
The attempted knife murder of a cyclist on the Mur can no longer be questioned in relation to the first suspect, who was 18 years old at the time. The sentence of 13 years in prison was reduced to twelve years by the Higher Regional Court. The now 20-year-old accomplice, who has also served 13 years, must appear before the jury again because of this case.
“To be convicted as a contributor”
“The Supreme Court did not like that she was convicted as a direct perpetrator,” the public prosecutor explains. Especially because the suspect only allegedly provided the knife for the attack on the cyclist, but did not stab him. “It would be right to sentence her again today for the crime of attempted murder, albeit as a co-offender.”
But the handsome 20-year-old suddenly had major memory problems in court on Tuesday. “I’ve been on so many medications and many of them for the first time. “I really don’t remember,” she repeated almost monotonously. In between she cried a lot and said she regretted everything. “It is practical as long as I know what is good for me,” said chairman Raimund Frei.
“I did not expect that”
“You helped her find a new victim and you supported her in the crime and gave her the knife,” Frei emphasized. ‘No, I didn’t know what she was planning to do. “I didn’t expect something like that,” the defendant shouts. Examining judge Verena Oswald does not want to take on this responsibility: “You had already tried to kill someone together before and you want to tell us that you did not expect something like this less than an hour later? Who will believe you…”
Eleven years in prison plus confinement
But the 20-year-old, who graduated from high school in custody and wants to become a beautician, still struggles with memory problems. The jury’s verdict that evening was unanimous: eleven years’ imprisonment plus (the same as for her accomplice) admission to a forensic-therapeutic center for danger; not legally binding.
