A driver panicked when a passerby tapped him on the hood. Punches and kicks to the face resulted in three fractures and a conviction by the Salzburg Regional Court.
An everyday situation enraged the previously convicted defendant and ultimately sent him to prison. On February 12, around lunchtime, the Bosnian (37) – with a blood alcohol level – was standing in his white car at the intersection of Ignaz-Harrer-Straße and Rudolf-Biebl-Straße in the center of Salzburg. He wanted to drive away and rolled into the zebra crossing. A passerby crossing the street then tapped him on the hood.
Victim mentally handicapped
That’s why the driver jumped. “He got out, walked specifically towards the victim and hit him with his fists,” an eyewitness said in the regional court on Tuesday. “That was shocking to me. No one did anything, so I got out and started screaming. But he just kept going.” There were five or six more punches and two more kicks to the victim who was on the ground, the witness said. She then even stood in front of the car because the bully wanted to drive away. “The victim was covered in blood,” she remembers. The trial also heard that there was blood spatter everywhere. What the woman recognized, but the defendant apparently did not: The victim is seriously mentally handicapped and thinks like a child between the ages of 6 and 9 – this was also noticeable at the trial. “I was afraid of the car, so I knocked,” the young man said.
“I’m sorry,” the defendant emphasized, explaining that this was due to stress at work and with his fiancée. That’s why he drank and reacted like that. The court showed no mercy: the invalid sentence was two years of unconditional imprisonment.
