After Iran’s attack on Israel, UN Secretary General António Guterres made an urgent appeal to the Security Council for de-escalation.
“The Middle East is on the brink of collapse,” Guterres warned on Sunday during a special meeting of the organization in New York. “The people of the region face the real threat of a devastating major conflict. This is the time to defuse and de-escalate. Now is the time for maximum restraint.”
The special session was convened at Israel’s request. Iran had previously attacked its arch-enemy Israel directly on Sunday evening for the first time in the history of the Islamic Republic.
Iran takes revenge
The Revolutionary Guards said they had fired dozens of drones and missiles. The operation, called ‘Sincere Promise’, was portrayed as retaliation for the killings of senior officers in Syria. On April 1, two brigade generals were killed in a suspected Israeli-led airstrike on the grounds of the Iranian embassy in the Syrian capital Damascus.
“We have a shared responsibility to work for peace,” Guterres told the Security Council. “Neither the region nor the world can afford any more war.”
