Finland has asked the EU for help in returning migrants from Russia. Because many people are trying to enter the European confederation across the common border with the aggressive state.
“We are preparing our own legislation, but we also need EU action,” Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo said after a visit to the border with Russia with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
Von der Leyen said the Commission agreed with Finland and was working closely with the migrants’ countries of origin. “We see one state using poor people to put pressure on another state, so this is clearly a security problem,” Von der Leyen said, referring to Russia.
Russia uses migration as a means of pressure
Finland closed its border with Russia last year after more and more people from countries such as Syria and Somalia came to Finland from Russia. Finland accused Russia of deliberately using migration as a tool against the country and the EU. The Kremlin has rejected that. Finland now wants to follow the example of Poland and Lithuania at its borders with Belarus and is working on a law that would allow border guards to refuse asylum seekers from Russia.
