A boat with more than 300 people on board capsized in a river in the capital of the Central African Republic on Friday. The accident claimed at least 58 lives. Reportedly, many people are still missing.
Thomas Djimasse, head of the Central African Republic’s civil defense, said 58 bodies have been recovered so far. “We don’t know how many people are underwater,” he lamented.
Passengers were traveling to funerals
According to witness accounts and video recordings shared on online networks, the passengers were on their way to funerals when the overloaded ship overturned and sank shortly after departure. According to the director of civil protection, rescuers arrived at the scene of the accident 40 minutes after the boat capsized.
