At least four people have been killed in severe flooding in southern China. Ten people were still being sought on Monday. State media reported about an impending once-in-a-century flood.
Days of heavy rain caused rivers to rise and a bridge to collapse in large parts of Guangdong province (see video above). In total, more than 110,000 people were rescued from the floodwaters. However, according to the state news agency Xinhua, help came too late for four people; they died in the flood. Ten people were still being sought on Monday.
Warning for strong winds
The rain won’t stop on Monday. Floods of up to 5.8 meters above the alert level were expected on rivers in the Per River Delta on Monday morning. The Chinese weather service also warned of thunderstorms and strong winds in coastal areas near Guangdong. This includes major cities such as Hong Kong and Shenzhen.
In another city – Jiangwan – landslides were reported on Sunday. At least six people were injured. China has repeatedly suffered severe floods, devastating droughts and record heat in recent years. Weather events generally become more frequent and intense.
