Ironically, the direct connection from the Zillertal in Tyrol to Mittersill in Salzburg was closed for hours on Saturday and Sunday during Whitsun holidays: After a mudslide on Saturday evening in Gerlos in Tyrol, Gerlossstrae remained closed until 10:30 am on Sunday.
Heavy rain and hail on Saturday around 8.30pm led to a mudslide on the B165 in Gerlos and the burial of the Gerlos trunk road near Gmünd for a length of approximately 500 meters. The B165 then had to be closed between Gmünd and Gerlos. In addition, two streams have overflowed their banks.
The cleanup work was in full swing overnight. The volunteer fire brigade in Gerlos and the road maintenance department in Zell am Ziller moved in, several excavators and wheel loaders from surrounding earth-moving companies were also deployed to clear the road. The road was closed until Sunday morning, police said. “This morning we continued to clean up with sweepers, water trucks and trucks, so that road safety is restored and we can reopen the road to traffic,” Gerhard Egger of the Road Maintenance Department Zell am Ziller explained on Sunday. Gerlossstrae was free again from 10.30 am.
Detour via Zillertal, A12 and Pass Thurn
According to the ÖAMTC, the temporary interruption of the direct connection between Zell am Ziller and Mittersill meant a long detour. According to the motorists’ club, the only alternative via the Zillertal (B169), the A12 and the Thurnpass (B161) means more than 100 kilometers more.
