US President Joe Biden has signed a law allowing new military aid to Ukraine (see video above). According to him, this is intended to supply anti-aircraft equipment, artillery, missile systems and armored vehicles to the warring country.
A total of 61 billion dollars (57 billion euros) will be spent on this. The new package is not only an investment in the security of Ukraine, but also in that of Europe, the US president said. The requested aid package has been blocked in the American parliament for months, making virtually no support possible since the end of last year.
Part of the money is earmarked from its own reserves for military equipment, the rest is distributed for other military support and financial aid, partly in the form of loans. The text of the law also calls for the delivery of long-range ATACMS missile systems. So far, the US government has officially only supplied systems with a range of about 165 kilometers, but the Ukrainian government would like systems with a range of 300 kilometers. Biden recently spoke about this on the phone with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Missiles delivered in secret?
According to a government confidant, the longer-range missiles have already been secretly delivered. They were used for the first time last week, the employee said. According to him, an airport in Crimea was shelled on April 17. The decision was controversial for months. Due to Russia’s use of long-range missiles from North Korea, the US government changed its mind. “We warned Russia about these things,” the employee said.
On Wednesday, the US government also approved billions in aid for war-torn Israel and Taiwan, as well as a bill against TikTok owner Bytedance that aims to virtually ban the video platform.
