The Russian foreign minister actually wanted to fly to Serbia on Monday to talk with Serbian government officials about the supply of Russian energy to the Balkan state. But sanctions and closed airspace around Serbia have thwarted the Kremlin’s chief diplomat.
According to the Russian agency Interfax, a senior ministry official on Sunday confirmed a corresponding Serbian media report according to which Bulgaria, North Macedonia and Montenegro had not authorized the overflight of the Russian government plane. When asked if the visit had been cancelled, the ministry official replied: “Diplomacy does not yet have the ability to shine.”
Lavrov now invites to a press conference
According to Prime Minister Ana Brnabic, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic personally took care of “the logistics” of Lavrov’s arrival. But even top-level interventions failed to achieve anything. On Sunday, Lavrov surprisingly invited foreign journalists to a press conference this Monday.
The international sanctions imposed on Moscow because of the war in Ukraine also apply to Lavrov. Serbia has condemned the Russian attack on Ukraine but has not endorsed the sanctions.
