An escaped python, an Aesculapian snake that appeared on the windshield while driving and an exotic turtle in the Wörthersee kept animal rescuers and the fire service in Carinthia on their toes at Pentecost.
On Whit Sunday a red-eared slider was spotted in the Wörthersee in Velden. “Unfortunately, these animals – which are not native to us – are repeatedly bought by private individuals. However, many do not think that they can grow to 30 centimeters and just let them go,” explains reptile expert Helga Happ. But the turtle has no place in the Wörthersee. “Uncovering is prohibited!” clarifies Happ, who was also contacted at Pentecost because of a snake alarm: “In Strasbourg a woman found a ball python.” Fortunately, the owner was quickly found. The ball python escaped when changing the terrarium.
In Griffen, the fire service tried to find an Aesculapian snake that had crawled into a car. “The snake suddenly appeared in front of the windshield while driving. The couple raised the alarm. Unfortunately, we were unable to free the snake,” says Rene Kanz of FF Griffen. “Now the car will remain with us for the time being and it will be collected by the ÖAMTC. Specialists will then try to get the animal out of the engine compartment.”
