A homeless 34-year-old has found an unusual place to stay in the US state of Michigan: the woman lived on the roof of a supermarket for about a year. Behind the sign of the chain branch “Family Flare” there is a cavity in which she had found her home. She even had a printer and houseplant in her home – before construction workers became aware of the illegal apartment through an extension cord.
The woman lived unnoticed on the roof of the supermarket in the city of Midland for several months. During this time, she converted the void into a comfortable home. She had a small desk in it, laid the floor and even set up her own pantry.
The illegal stay was discovered by chance on April 23. “(The contractors) had seen an extension cord running from one of the roof units to this particular sign where she had been living,” Brennon Warren, spokesman for the Midland Police Department, told USA Today. How the woman regularly got onto the roof is a mystery to the director – she did not reveal it.
Woman insightful: “Don’t worry, I’ll go”
The entry door is only about 3 feet by 4 feet, “Definitely big enough to get in,” Warren explained. After the workers discovered the refuge of the homeless, they alerted the supermarket management, who in turn called the police. When officers went to the roof to talk to the woman, “she came right up to the door and basically said, ‘Don’t worry, I’m leaving,'” he said.
Supermarket provides supplies
The woman was not charged, but was simply banned from entering the building. The affected person fully understood this measure. However, the woman declined the director’s offers for help. She also immediately left her spot on the roof, but had to leave some of her belongings there because she “couldn’t take it all with her,” as Warren explained. The supermarket is in contact with the lady and wants to help her get her other items back.
“We are proud of our associates who responded to this situation with the utmost compassion and professionalism,” the supermarket chain told USA Today. “Ensuring sufficient safe, affordable housing remains a widespread problem across the country and our community must work together to address it,” the company said.
Police spokesperson wishes those affected “the best”
The case also left a lasting impression on the police spokesperson. “In my 10-year career here in Midland, I have never experienced a situation like this,” Warren said. “You never thought something like this would happen, but I wish her the best.”
