By caesarean section – first birth in the Red Cross field hospital in Gaza

Date:

The Red Cross is combating the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip. In the middle of the Gaza war, the first baby was born, shortly after a field hospital was opened. Austria has a particularly important task here.

Not much good news has come out of the Gaza Strip since Hamas’s terrorist massacre of thousands of Israelis and the resulting war in the coastal region. It is all the more gratifying that the recently opened Red Cross field hospital on the Mediterranean coast, near the town of Rafah, has been able to come up with one: last weekend the first baby was born there by caesarean section – may that be a good omen for the next months.

Maximum 200 patients per day
“We as the Red Cross make no distinction to which party in the conflict someone belongs,” says Andrea Reisinger of the Red Cross in Vienna. “Anyone who is injured or ill and not carrying a weapon has the right to treatment from us.” The new field hospital, which in addition to surgery specializes in gynecology and obstetrics, but also in maternal and newborn care, has 60 hospital patients. beds and an outpatient clinic, which can care for up to 200 patients per day.

The Austrian Red Cross is responsible for water purification in the new field hospital. This is especially difficult in the Gaza Strip because the groundwater is not only polluted, but also contains far too much salt, explains water and hygiene expert Georg Ecker of the Red Cross. The water pipes are damaged and surface water is virtually non-existent, according to the expert who checked the situation on site.

Plant provides water supply
These special circumstances require special technology that is very complex. The associated devices are also difficult to obtain. “We ultimately bought the system in Germany for 80,000 euros,” says Andrea Reisinger. They are also expensive to use.

To achieve this, 500 liters of water per hour can be purified to drinking water quality – that corresponds to 12,000 liters per day.
