During excavation work to strengthen the local network in Helfens in the municipality of Niederleis in the Weinviertel, in addition to a hand grenade from the Second World War, the remains of a human being were also found. The war relic was recovered and the dead person was removed from the construction site.
According to a broadcast by Netz Niederösterreich GmbH on Thursday, the war relic was recovered by the mine clearance service and the dead person was removed from the construction site under the supervision of the Austrian Black Cross.
“It happens again and again that we encounter old grenades or bombs during our pipeline projects,” reports Thomas Krupicka, head of the Netz Niederösterreich Service Center Stockerau. “But luckily we won’t find any dead people.”
According to the broadcast, the excavation work was stopped immediately after the discovery of the hand grenade. The mine clearance service then searched the nearby area for further war relics and discovered human remains in addition to detonators.
