Ukrainian forces have apparently carried out an airstrike on the Belbek military airport in Russian-occupied Crimea. Satellite images show destroyed fighter jets and a burned-out fuel depot. There was no official statement from Kiev about the attack.
According to US satellite company Maxar, the destroyed fighter jets included two MiG-31s and one SU-27 fighter jet. An S-400 air defense system was also reportedly hit. The Moscow-controlled air base is a key base for Russian air strikes on Ukraine. Apparently American-made ATACMS missiles were used in the attack. However, the Kremlin had only announced its defense.
Kremlin: 102 drones shot down
Meanwhile, Ukraine also scored a new hit on a Russian oil refinery. After a drone attack, a fire broke out at the facility in Tuapse, Krasnodar Territory. The Russian Defense Ministry in Moscow said on Friday that 102 Ukrainian drones were destroyed overnight, half of them over the Crimean peninsula.
There were also deaths in the attacks, including on Krasnodar and Belgorod oblasts. In the Belgorod region, a woman and her four-year-old son died after a drone hit their car, Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said. The father and another man were injured. A major fire also broke out at a gas station after the impact, as can be seen in photos.
Power supply affected in Crimea
The Russian side also said the Black Sea Fleet had neutralized six maritime drones. As a result of the attacks, a substation in Sevastopol, Crimea, was damaged. “There will be isolated power outages,” local governor Mikhail Razvoschaev told Telegram. Given the situation, schools and kindergartens remained closed. Sevastopol, the capital of Crimea, which was annexed by Russia in 2014, is home to Russia’s Black Sea Fleet.
Killed in air raid on Kharkov
Ukraine, for its part, said it shot down all 20 drones Russia targeted at the country that night. The army reported the shootings over the Kharkov, Poltava, Vinnytsia, Odessa and Mykolaiv regions. At least two people have been killed in a Russian airstrike on the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, authorities said. In addition, thirteen people were injured, the Kharkiv region government said.
Russian planes dropped two glide bombs on the city on Friday, Governor Oleh Synjehubov wrote in Telegram. According to Kharkov Mayor Ihor Techerov, four explosions occurred during the attack. A fire broke out when an explosion occurred. Kharkiv regional governor Oleh Synyehubov said five buildings were damaged, including an administrative building. Ukraine’s second-largest city, which is close to the border with Russia, has been bombed by the Russian air force for weeks. At the same time, Russian ground troops are continuing the offensive they started a week ago in the border area near Kharkiv.
