On Sunday afternoon, a 32-year-old tried to sink to the ground while climbing in Weißkirchen (Murtal district) in Styria. For unknown reasons he fell and was fatally injured.
Around 3 p.m., a 32-year-old German wanted to climb a lead route in the climbing garden with his 28-year-old partner from the Murtal. The 28-year-old secured him. The climber climbed the route and was eventually lowered.
From about 18 meters high
Due to a shortened rope, they both knew in advance that abseiling would be completely impossible. When he was at a height of about 60 feet, the 32-year-old likely used a method common in sport climbing to lower himself to the ground.
As a result, he fell. The 28-year-old and other climbers started the rescue chain. The man died on the spot from his injuries. The cause of the accident and the exact course of the accident are currently the subject of an ongoing investigation by the Murtal Alpine Police.
Troops from the Red Cross and the Christophorus 17 rescue helicopter were deployed, as well as troops from the Weißkirchen volunteer fire brigade, officers from the Obdach, Judenburg, Knittelfeld and Scheifling police stations and troops from the Murtal Alpine Police.
