Police reported a mayor from the Jennersdorf district who was on his way from Slovenia to Austria. He now warns people via Facebook to be careful. The “Krone” knows the background.
Freedom of travel without internal border controls – that was the ambitious goal of the Schengen Agreement, which should apply to all citizens of the EU countries. What was hailed from the start as one of the European Union’s greatest successes is overshadowed by bitter reality.
Stopped by the police
Fabio Halb, mayor of Mühlgraben in the Jennersdorf district, felt this. Driving home across the border into Bonisdorf after a trip to nearby Slovenia, the local SPÖ leader and regional manager was stopped by Austrian police.
Traveling without a passport
He was charged with violating Article 2(1) of the BGBI Passport Act. 839/92 accused. This means that Fabio Halb “crossed the federal border without carrying a valid travel document” when he entered the country. The fine is €36, paid by the BH.
The mayor takes note of the fine and pays it conscientiously. At the same time, he expects the same consequences for the penalties against foreign speeders, drunk drivers and smugglers. On Facebook, Fabio Halb now warns everyone who often only visits Slovenia for a short period of time to be careful: “Be sure to take your passport or ID card with you!”
