Once again, the fire brigades in south-eastern Styria had to do an excellent job: heavy thunderstorms struck, especially in the Hartberg-Fürstenfeld district. The result was flooded streets and cellars.
There is no end to the severe weather in May in its last days: A rain front passed over Styria on Tuesday afternoon – the southern part of the Hartberg-Fürstenfeld district was especially hard hit. The problem: “Due to the already softened, wet soil from the previous rain showers, the soil could no longer fully absorb the new amounts of water,” reports the fire brigade association of the Hartberg district.
The result was a large number of floods from Unterlungitz via Sebersdorf and Bad Waltersdorf to Neudau-Neudauberg. The first alarm went off at 1 p.m. and a little later the B50 was flooded near a hardware store. The fire brigade was busy pumping until the evening hours because numerous cellars were flooded.
The Burgau Fire Department is also reporting heavy amounts of rain in their community. “Creeks overflowed their banks and flooded streets. The water flowed into the cellars and courtyards of houses,” the report said. 80 forces were deployed in this area alone. Sandbags were stacked and a mobile flood barrier was set up. There is still no relief in sight; Rain is forecast again for the longer weeks.
