Operations in London clinics have been postponed due to a cyber attack. Blood transfusions were also not possible, the trade magazine ‘Health Service Journal’ (HSJ) reported, citing internal information from the NHS health service. The reason was a ‘serious IT incident’ at a pathology service provider. Some procedures and surgeries were referred to other providers, the report said.
Guy’s and St. Thomas’ Lonon hospitals were also affected. King’s College Hospital confirmed the attack to the British news agency PA.
According to the “HSJ” report, this is a so-called ransomware attack, in which criminals encrypt corporate or government data and demand a ransom for decryption. It will take “weeks instead of days” before the data is accessible again, the newspaper said.
There is speculation that hospital emergency rooms could be affected as blood test results may not be accessible in the short term. Pathology departments help diagnose and treat diseases and infections by analyzing samples, including blood and tissue.
