In Austria, cleaning and housework are still predominantly a women’s affair. A new survey shows: 70 percent of women feel responsible for cleaning their own home. For 23 percent of the men surveyed, a clean car is more important than a clean house.
According to the research*, the fact that housework is largely in the hands of women also places a greater burden on women. While just under a quarter of men surveyed (23 percent) found the burden of daily housework very heavy to fairly heavy, the same figure was found for more than one in three women (36 percent).
When it came to the popularity of cleaning, women and men were in exceptional agreement, with 60 percent of respondents (64 percent men, 55 percent women) not liking cleaning at all. Nearly three-quarters of women (73 percent) indicate that they clean alone, while 46 percent of men surveyed only do this with their partner.
People who have not liked cleaning for generations
Among men, only about a third (35 percent) of respondents felt responsible for cleaning. There was no difference between the generations. The male representatives of Generation Z are the same grumpy cleaners as their baby boomer counterparts.
Cooking, on the other hand, tops the ‘hit list’ of the most popular household activities (42 percent), followed by vacuuming (30 percent).
* The research into the “cleaning behavior of Austrians” was conducted by TQS-Research & Consulting KG on behalf of Vorwerk Austria. 1000 people in Austria were interviewed using CAWI (Computer Assisted Web Interviews), representative of age, gender, federal state and living situation. At the time of the survey (May 23 to May 27, 2024), people surveyed were between 15 and 68 years old, said they were male, female or diverse and lived alone or in multi-person households, in opposite-sex or interpersonal relationships of the same sex.)
