Due to a “serious situation”, Hollande is participating in the French elections

Date:

Former French President François Hollande has surprisingly announced that he will stand as a candidate for the new elections in his country. According to his own statement, he does not pursue anything for himself personally. Rather, the situation is ‘extremely serious’ as a result of far-right extremism.

“Since the liberation from the Nazis, the far right has never been so close to power,” the Socialist Party politician said on Saturday. He therefore supports the merger of left-wing parties that want to stop the right-wing populist Rassemblement National (RN). The RN received about 31.5 percent of the votes in the European elections almost a week ago.

As reported, French President Emmanuel Macron responded by dissolving parliament and calling new elections at short notice (see video above). These are scheduled for June 30 and July 7. Macron’s party is the liberal List Renaissance.

Soon RN Prime Minister?
According to studies, the RN could achieve a similar result in the parliamentary elections as in the European elections. This would make it the strongest force in parliament and could even appoint the prime minister. Hollande made it clear about this position that he was not seeking anything for himself personally. “I was president of the republic.”

He made ‘an extraordinary decision in an extraordinary situation’. It is rare for a former president to run for parliament in a constituency. The 69-year-old was a member of parliament for his home region of Corrèze from 1988 to 1993 and from 1997 to 2012, and held the office of president from 2012 to 2017.

On Saturday he called on the French to stop right-wing populist parties in the elections.
