German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock is extremely concerned about the current developments in Russia’s brutal aggression against Ukraine. If there is a lack of support for the war-torn country, the consequences for Germany and NATO could be fatal.
“If we do not continue to support Ukraine, we risk putting Putin’s troops on the border with Poland. The war is quickly coming to the territory of the EU and NATO,” the Green politician warned in the “Süddeutsche Zeitung” (Monday).
“It is difficult to quantify how much it would cost if we had to defend our freedom and security ourselves,” Baerbock said. She emphasized: “In the end it only comes down to one thing: supporting Ukraine also keeps the war away from us.”
There were fears of new refugee movements
Baerbock also warned of new breakaway movements. “If Ukraine can no longer defend itself – and I say this especially to those who refuse support – millions more people will have to flee. After all, who voluntarily lives under torture and occupation? More than a million Ukrainians have already found protection in Germany.
“Losing would be fatal – for a free Ukraine and a free Europe,” Baerbock made clear. Therefore, more support from the country is needed. She therefore once again “urgently appealed to all partners worldwide to transfer additional air defense systems.”
