An extraordinary operation took place in St. Pölten (Lower Austria) on Sunday. A monitor lizard had escaped and was ‘exploring’ the adjacent gardens. Florianis recaptured the reptile.
The St. Pölten-Wagram fire department has been called out several times for reptile operations. Residents repeatedly sound the alarm because, for example, a snake has ended up in the garden shed. But the Florianis did not expect this reptile on Sunday! A monitor lizard was on a “reconnaissance tour” through the adjacent gardens.
Cat became restless
‘Hermine’, that’s the name of the one-meter-long reptile, was sitting on a garden wall between two plots, protected between a cat run and a garden shed. A group of volunteers from the fire brigade was immediately on the scene and assessed the situation. The owner of the property had previously wondered why his cat was running around so excitedly and looking for shelter – “Hermine” was the trigger.
Finally, the animal rescue team was also called, which has specialist knowledge in this area and could also provide a robust device. Monitor lizards are strong animals that can only be captured with a “heavy” device in the form of a retractable steel cable loop.
Reptile was handed over to the owner
“Together with the animal rescue, ‘Hermine’ was quickly – and we believe also carefully – moved to a transport cage,” the FF St. Pölten-Wagram reported on Sunday. The runaway was then returned to the owner, who had been looking for the monitor lizard for some time and noticed the flashing lights.
