Search failed – girl (12) missing – probably killed by a crocodile

Date:

Emergency services have been frantically searching for a 12-year-old girl in Australia’s tropical north since Tuesday afternoon. He was last seen swimming in a waterway called Mango Creek, about 350 kilometres southwest of Darwin. Investigators suspect she was attacked and killed by a crocodile…

Officers and residents were on duty with boats and searched a large area of water near the Aboriginal community of Nganmarriyanga, the report said. But to no avail. “Our thoughts are with the family and the community,” police spokeswoman Erica Gibson said.

Saltwater crocodiles extremely aggressive
The region is home to both saltwater and freshwater crocodiles. Saltwater crocodiles, which can grow up to six metres in length, are considered much more dangerous and extremely aggressive. Freshwater crocodiles, known as ‘freshies’, which can grow up to three metres in length, only attack humans if they feel threatened. However, their attacks are usually not fatal.

“Problem crocodile” eaten together
According to the Northern Territory government, there are more than 100,000 crocodiles in the region. On average, there are two fatal crocodile attacks per year across Australia.

In June, members of an Aboriginal community in the Northern Territory shot and collectively ate a “problem crocodile” that had repeatedly approached animals and people (see photo above).
