At the current temperatures, the body can get real problems. This can even be fatal. The chief physician of the Austrian Red Cross explains what you can do in such cases. And how you can protect yourself from swimming accidents.
Vienna is currently experiencing a heatwave. If you can’t bunker down in cool rooms, there are a few things to keep in mind right now.
“Make sure you are never exposed to the burning sun for too long. Take breaks, drink enough water and wear hats as sun protection,” explains Wolfgang Schreiber, chief physician at the Red Cross. Sufficient, that means two to three liters of fluid per day.
A heat emergency, recognizable by headache, nausea, chills and cramps, can be life-threatening. As a first responder, you must act quickly: the affected person must be placed in the shade and the head and neck cooled with moist cloths. And he must drink (water, tea, unsweetened fruit juices). If there is no improvement, call the emergency services.
Swimming Accidents
And here’s what the doctor advises to prevent swimming accidents: take a quick shower before swimming to prevent circulatory problems, never go into the water under the influence and never let non-swimmers out of sight. Pay special attention to children and the elderly. “Do not hesitate to alert the lifeguard if you notice dangerous situations. In the event of an emergency, alert the emergency services and start resuscitation immediately,” says Schreiber.
