After the region around the southern Italian city of Naples was shaken by the strongest earthquake in forty years on May 20, it has still not calmed down. The population lives in fear.
On Thursday morning, the earth shook again in the area of the volcanic caldera Campi Flegrei (Phlegraean Fields) with a magnitude of 3.6. This was clearly noticeable in many districts of Naples and several other cities in the region, the Italian volcanology institute INGV reported.
The epicenter was two kilometers underground. For months, the entire Phlegraean Fields area has been plagued by seismic activity. The earthquake was followed by further aftershocks.
Large volcanic area
The Campi Flegrei (literally translated: Burning Fields) is a volcanic area of 150 square kilometers. It extends both on land and in the sea and includes dozens of eruption craters.
The first eruption about 34,000 years ago would have been similar to those of Tambora in 1815 and Krakatau in 1883 in Indonesia, which changed the global climate.
