Seven people, including three children and a teenager, died in a fire in a residential building in Nice, France (see video above). Investigators suspect arson. The fire broke out on Thursday evening.
Authorities say the seven-story home is in an area known for drug trafficking. Surveillance camera footage shows three masked people. The fire started in the second-floor stairwell and spread to the top floor via a riser.
A family of ten from Comoros was living in the affected apartment at the time. Three children died immediately in the fire, and a 17-year-old died after jumping out of the window. Three other people were injured, one of whom was in critical condition. The 37-year-old also jumped out of the window to escape the flames.
30 residents brought to safety
In total, more than seventy firefighters were present. They used turntable ladders to bring about thirty residents to safety, including three from the burning apartment. The mother of the affected family brought the survivors to the window and then went back to get the remaining children. It was said that she died in the process. The Public Prosecution Service is now investigating arson resulting in death.
