Nothing works anymore, the employees of the city of Dornbirn discovered on Friday morning. They also had to deal with an incorrect update of an IT security program that had caused computer failures worldwide. This presented the employees of the city hospital with special challenges.
In the city hospital of Dornbirn, all operations planned for Friday were postponed as a precaution. Ambulance operations were carried out in an analogous manner, emergencies were forwarded to the state hospitals via the rescue control center. The medical technology devices worked, but networking and sending, for example, X-rays or laboratory results was not possible.
Meanwhile, the IT department staff at Dornbirn City Hall had their hands full. An update had to be installed for each individual PC. About 100 computers in the city hall were affected, and about 95 percent of the 700 PCs in use in the hospital.
The crisis management has worked
In the afternoon, everyone involved could breathe a sigh of relief. The computers were working again. “The crisis management in both the city of Dornbirn and the city hospital worked very well again and ensured that the critical infrastructure was not endangered despite the IT failures,” summarized the city officials.
In the hospital, employees are prepared for such situations through professional documentation and regular exercises. Processes can be quickly adjusted and business operations continue to operate even in difficult situations.
