Kiev Pays High Price – Selenskyi Names Final Destination for Invasion for First Time

Date:

On Sunday evening, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for the first time named a specific goal for his troops’ advance into the western Russian region of Kursk: “Creating a buffer zone on the territory of the aggressor.” Meanwhile, Russian forces are launching a counterattack in Donbass.

In view of the heavy fighting there and in eastern Ukraine, he asked his Western partners in his evening video address for a rapid supply of weapons and ammunition.

“War has no holidays,” Zelenskyi said, especially against the US, Britain and France. Ukrainian soldiers have “done an excellent job,” Zelensky said. “But we need to accelerate the offer from our partners, we are asking for it.” Ukraine needs solutions; it depends primarily on the timely arrival of the promised aid packages.

The situation in Donbass is getting worse
Especially in the areas around Donbass, the Ukrainian units seemed to be under severe pressure. In some places, they have already had to retreat. The area around Toretsk in particular is “more than just defense for Ukraine; it is now the main goal of our defense measures in general to destroy as much as possible of Russia’s potential and the potential for war and to carry out maximum counterattack work,” Zelensky stressed.

Ukrainian military officials acknowledged the difficulties around Pokrovsk. “We can retreat, give up a small settlement or lose a small battle,” Serhiy Zekhotskyi, an officer in the brigade deployed there, said on television. “But the main task is to win the war.”

The Russians launch a counterattack
Russian soldiers are currently advancing near Mykolaivka to disrupt the supply route between Pokrovsk and Karlovka. “Here they are trying to achieve something,” Zekhotskyi said. But it is precisely at this point that the Russian military expects “something unexpected.” The officer did not provide details.

Torezk and Pokrovsk have been constant hot spots in recent weeks. The Ukrainian General Staff also reported heavy fighting around the locations. During the day, 24 Russian attacks were recorded near Pokrovsk alone, some with support from fighter jets. In total, fifteen Russian attacks were repelled near Torezk. The information could not be independently verified.

The Ukrainian general in Kiev did not provide information about the fighting in the western Russian region of Kursk. The situation report simply states that Russian artillery and warplanes have attacked Ukrainian positions around Sumy in the east of the country. Sumy is considered a supply center for Ukrainian troops fighting in the Kursk region.

Significant Ukrainian losses
The Ukrainian army suffered unusually high losses of valuable technology during its advance on Kursk, the business magazine “Forbes” summarized. The losses of tanks, armored vehicles and heavy weapons are extremely high and are not in proportion to the simultaneous losses on the Russian side.

The Ukrainian losses are apparently enormous, as war bloggers also believe:

Advancing over open terrain, the vehicles were often exposed to air and artillery strikes, causing losses to be “twice as high as normal,” the newspaper quoted analysts as saying. However, if Ukraine could hold on to the captured territory, the losses would be worth it. Zelensky had repeatedly complained about Russian missile and artillery strikes from the Kursk region on targets in eastern Ukraine.

Ukraine threatens a new front
Ukraine is also threatened by a new front. Meanwhile, Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko said he had moved larger troop units to his country’s border with Ukraine.
