A sailboat sank off the coast of Sicily on Monday during a storm, leaving seven people missing. The 50-meter-long vessel, which was carrying 22 people, sank at around 5 a.m. in the sea near Porticello, Palermo.
On board the luxury yacht ‘Bayesan’, which was sailing under the British flag, were mainly British, a New Zealander, a Sri Lankan, two Anglo-French and an Irishman.
Firefighters divers rescued a one-year-old boy who was taken to Palermo Children’s Hospital. The survivors received medical care.
During the party a storm broke out
According to witnesses, the yacht was not far from the port of Porticello when the violent storm broke out. A party was organized on board that lasted until late at night. It is assumed that the seven missing persons were in the cabins and could not reach safety in time. A boat that was near the Bayesian provided first aid to the survivors.
The wreck currently lies on the seabed at a depth of 49 meters. Searches for the missing are being conducted by diving units and helicopters.
